The Art Lot is a vibrant public art initiative to transform a shared parking area, located at 13 Fourth Street, into a colorful, inviting space that adds vitality to the district and enhances the downtown experience for both residents and visitors.

The murals were painted on a variety of surfaces—including brick, vinyl siding, cinder block, wood, and fencing—each averaging approximately 20 feet wide by 10 feet high. Two murals are located on second-story surfaces accessible via flat rooftops, and three murals will require a lift due to their height.

Artists were encouraged to explore themes such as Fond du Lac’s history, community, and natural features, with an emphasis on interactive murals that create engaging photo opportunities.

My mural is really inspired by nostalgia. Specifically, the nostalgia you feel looking back on yourself as a kid enjoying the summertime. You feel bright, warm, welcome. That’s what I wanted my mural to represent.

Growing up in FDL, I’ve always been inspired by Lake Winnebago and all of the activities and sightseeing opportunities that it provides. I wanted to pay homage to it, as well as the lighthouse, with this mural.

The business owner had requested a white tail deer as the subject of the mural and that was right up my alley, as animal paintings are my thing. I like to add a magical touch to each painting and the starry blue sky was the perfect backdrop to this piece.

The series of animals I’ve entitled “Starry Wishes “. This series that I designed and painted with my daughter Claire Zankle, are absolutely true to my personal style. Whimsy and animals together are always my natural inclination, and my daughter is cut from the same cloth! In each of these paintings I’ve hidden the names of my grandson, a nephew, and three nieces. I often hide surprises in my work and it makes the process even more fulfilling for me! This series coordinates with the larger mural beneath it (Oh, Deer!”)

I was inspired to paint a frog because it represents transformation, renewal, and growth ~ qualities that resonate with the idea of turning an ordinary, drab surface into something vibrant and meaningful.

Just as a frog undergoes metamorphosis, this mural represents the power of change and the beauty that can be achieved through creative expression

177 S Main St & 179 S Main St – The Goldsmith and Jack’s Team Sports

A spread of photos depicting the people, places, and activities of Fond du Lac, including bike paths, fishing, wildflowers, the lighthouse, and the gazebo. The center portion is a recreation of a 1925 postcard sent from Fond du Lac. The doorways include photo booth strips of people from Fond du Lac representing the ’50s and ’60s, the ’80s and ’90s, and the current century.

A depiction of full-color ’60s and ’70s muscle cars on Fond du Lac’s Main Street in the late ’60s. The street is shown in sepia tones. A large racing flag hangs above the cars and is positioned so that observers can interact with the mural by pretending to start the drag race. Interacting with the mural is scientifically shown to be 200% safer than actual drag racing, which is illegal and dangerous.
