Meet Me Downtown: Adam Mumper
Adam Mumper, owner of Underground Ink Tattoo and Gallery, has always been good at art. His passion for it is evident immediately upon walking into his shop. The walls are covered in framed pieces as well as sketches of ideas that are still in development with subjects varying from intricate dragons to bold graphic shapes to portraits of celebrities. However, Mumper’s love of art goes deeper than just sketching and admiring artwork.
“Art is what wakes me up. It helps me grow as a person and reminds to live in the moment; I could wake up any day and everything would be gone. I’m grateful for everything I have,” says Mumper. His compassionate community actions are fueled by this idea. During 2017, his first year in business, Mumper donated more than 50 tattoos of the letter “W” when his network of friends were dealing with the loss of friend William James Amp, who passed away in a car accident. The act of getting a memorial tattoo was therapeutic and allowed those impacted to talk and bond about the loss of their friend. Any funds that were donated for the tattoos went directly to helping the family with funeral costs. Mumper also gives back to his community in other ways such as organizing a Hurricane Relief drive in 2017, providing low- to no-cost tattoos for veterans, and working with up-and-coming tattoo artists like his new apprentice Olivia Haskins.
In addition to art, Mumper also has a passion for interior design, particularly of the steampunk variety.
“I feel like I was born in the wrong era. I like the way people presented themselves in the Victorian era; the architecture was gothic and dark, while still feeling elegant and classy.” There are touches of this love in the studio, but Mumper has had to put his interior design ideas for the space on hold while he focuses his business administration and tattooing skills.
Mumper’s tattooing ability stands on its own merit, but his customers also know him to be selfless and kind; a man who literally and figuratively wears his heart on his sleeve.
